Kandyan Dancer | 5% for SL Charity

I know if you are a Sri Lankan you know who is a Kandyan Dancer. If you are a foreigner and if you have visited Sri Lanka, there is a huge possibility that you have seen a Kandyan Dancer. They are Identical for us. But this is not about those Kandyan Dancers.

This is about the flower called Kandyan Dancer. Sometimes Kandyan Dance, Kandyan Dancing or whatever the name people are get used to. This is a type of orchid. The original name of this is Oncidium sphacelatum. This orchid type is called as Kandyan Dancer within Sri Lanka.

At first I was also thinking why it is called by this name. So I used to look at the plant and flower and find why. And I have asked from my mom. Every answer lead me towards Original Kandyan Dancer. But, I didn’t noticed it first. It surely has petals looks like a skirt of a dancer. So I thought that is why. Then it should have named Dancer. Why specially “Kandyan Dancer”? No… it wasn’t just a dancer.

Today I noticed a flower which is separated from all other flowers of the plant. So I could clearly see the features. It amazed me by just one look. I couldn’t missed the features of a Kandyan dancer. The flower looks exactly like that.

The big petal looks like positioning legs while dancing. “Uludaya” is the part of the costume which covers the lower part of the Kandyan dancer. Then I saw a little face from the flower. The face of the Dancer who wear “Paimpatha” and “Thodupath”.

And there is a little design between the big petal and the face petal. This looks like the “Avulheraya”. And there are few petals looks like strips, may be we can define them as “Jata Patiya”, “Devalla” or may be as the hands of the dancer.

I really am amused by seeing the similarity of the flower and the Dancer. It is hard to notice every detail when we look at the flowers all together.
