The history of each country has such stories when children especially orphans were used for some work that required the benefits of child's small size or their tiny fingers. The same time the fact that the children did not have any knowledge and were tricked easily because of their naive nature that they will trust what adults say and do they they were told.
When you watch old documentary you can come across this historical phenomenon from 1600 when in Britain houses were heated using wood and coal and houses had chimneys and open fire. While using fire the product of burning is soot that will be accumulated on walls and that will block the chimneys and smoke as well as dangerous products will not be able to exit chimneys.
The easiest way for the chimney cleaners to do their job was to use children as young as 4 year old and let them to climb into chimneys and sweep the chimney walls, that is where it is coming "chimney boys" although it was not only boys but girls too.
You can imagine that even breathing smoke for seconds you immediately notice that you start coughing. Cough is natural reflex of our body that is a protective mechanism that helps us to clear our lungs and protect.
Following health problems these children developed:
lung disease, asbestosis and lung cancer
deformities of legs, especially knees and ankles because they needs to use them to make themselves stable inside of chimneys. While children are still growing during such work the natural growth and shape of the bones will be completely distorted
soot of chimneys is well known now to cause scrotal cancer
often while breathing we automatically swallow saliva in the situation with such children being hours in chimneys they accumulate soot in throat and swallow over, that is also one of the cause of oesophageal cancer of cancer of gullet
irritation of eyes with such fine pollution of soot can cause long term lost of eyesight
the accidents of getting stuck in such chimneys and often they children died
such children did not live long
Due to above mentioned health issues of children and also cases of their death. There were some parents who gave their children for such job and received payment for the work of their children but faced their early death. After such situations that were happening from 1600 to 1870 for about 200 years, there was a Law not to use children for chimney sweep.
In 1875 that was officially announced since then Joseph Glass the engineer from Bristol invented special brushes and rods that are still used to sweep chimneys. Nowadays there is stove pipes that are connecting your stove going through chimney and opening on the top of chimney, that lead smoke directly outside and it is a closed system, with that you do not need chimney sweepers, maybe just once when it is getting installed.
I am glad that nowadays "chimney boys" are history.

It is so sad that till the time Joseph Glass invented the special bush and rods there were no law to protect innocent boys and girls from life threatening job for two hundred years.. Thank you ma'am for remembering them and let us aware of those boys and girls miseries.

I think in early years nobody thought about that and there were not many who were ready to stand for children. Luckily, people then understand and decided to take the children under their protection.

It's very disheartening to see what children under slavery passed through. We are still in that era of children slavery because when I look around I can still see younger ones who were supposed to be in school roaming around and selling on the street. All these menace will stop if everyone will come out to educate those who think it's their right to exploit these children.

The children are our future and we must not joke with them because they are the hope of our future. It is quite disheartening how the hope and the dreams of many children have been destroyed due to this child slavery
