Better do it yourself: Replacing Rain gutter and drain pipes

Hello my dear Steemians,

 

You all know that not only us people are getting older with time but also, for example, our houses. We live in old 200+ year old house and when we moved we have noticed those beautiful drain pipes , they have such decorative boxes and the pipes have some pattern. The pipes are outside that means there is a lot of exposure to wind and rain, also the material itself is Iron and being exposed to water it starts rusting. Throughout last few years we noticed that couple of metal clips that were holding pipe fixed to wall fallen off, pipes also started to be blocked time to time and water was not draining well anymore. Therefore, last couple of years @myskye was brushing through those pipes. The only problem is the height of such house it is almost about 6 meters and he is not a professional roofer, to do such work on high ladder but also if something happens we do not want to risk.

We had a company that was cleaning our rain gutter so we decided to ask them.

Of course, the people were happy to come and assess, there were two options:

• aluminium, or
• plastic one

Can you guess what we have taken? We have decided for plastic the reason, of course, the price that also included the working hours. It is very expensive here to get some handymen.

Often when we use any service we hope that everything will be well done and we do not worry much but it is not really like that. In order to avoid any bad done job we take companies that are officially registered and actually doing a lot of work locally.

Time to time and often we get disappointed and that is already got something routine. When we were the first years here it was like a shock but slowly we see that the quality of many handymen are very low as well as their interest in providing their service.

You might not believe us but here it is have a look what kind of work we received and were told that everything is done.

 

 

 

Here is the other pipe and once again, it is not straight like any normal pipe should look like.

If we were not at home and if we did not see the workers, I would have thought that they were drunk, but trust me they were not.

 

 

When they presented this job and said that this is done, we questioned that the pipes, somehow not straight, the answer was that the wall itself was not very straight and while to apply clamps to fix the pipe it is deviating "a bit".

The boss of the company was on annual leave but we could contact him via SMS, following day it was raining an windy therefore the first box and upper part of pipe was shifted to right and left depending on wind direction. The second pipe was not draining from rain gutter into box but running over the edge and along the wall.

You can imagine our frustration. The employees of the company had to come three more times to fix the first box and upper pipe but also to exchange the second box to another one.

On final day when the boss came to get money, we pointed again to pipes that they are still not really straight he then applied some more clips, that slightly improved the position but to tell the truth it is still visible that there is slight deviation from middle line.

Our poor wall had so many new holes in its sandstones so that we just said that is fine, so that our wall is not a Swiss cheese

What is the conclusion from this experience?

If you want to do something, the best to do it yourself!
