Stepping to No. 52 Gage Street in Central, we find a TongLau, a HK style old flat. On the ground floor it’s a Japanese restaurant. The 2nd to 4th floors are residential. The flat recorded the important history of the China democratic revolution. In 1901, two important revolutionaries scarified. One of them was Yeung Ku-wan, who was killed in the 2nd floor of the flat.
In the last post of HK Snapshot, we talked about the first Guangzhou uprising launched by Sun Yat-sen which open the new page of Chinese democratic revolution. Unfortunately, the uprising failed. Lu Haodong, good friend of Sun sacrified and other revolution leaders exiled to oversea. They included Sun, Yeung Ku-wan and Cheng Si-Leung.
Cheng was the schoolmate of Sun. Yeung was one of the most important leaders of the early revolution. He might be more important than Sun! In 1895, Sun found the Revive China Society and meged the Furen Literary Society which was founded by Yeung. After the merging, the first thing must be selection of the president! Sun targeted in the overthrow of the Qing dynasty (the last imperial dynasty of China) and he thought having a new emperor was also ok. But Yeung insisted on forming a Republic. The Revive China Society was divided into the parties and the middle parties also supported Yeung. Sun and Yeung even fought each other. Finally Yeung was voted as the president and Sun was the secretary.

After the failure of the first Guangzhou uprising, Sun and Yeung were forced not to enter HK again in 5 years. Yeung travelled to Singapore, South Africa and then Japan to develop the Revive China Society. Cheng and Sun escaped to Japan and formed the gathered the Triad and Gelaohui (Hatchet Gang). Later Sun went to London and was caught and detained at the Chinese Legation in London. He was saved by his teacher James Cantlie and wrote the book “Kidnapped in London”. Sun became an international famous person.

5 years passed. In 1900, All people came back to HK. Sun was already the revolution leader. Yeung quitted the president of Revive China Society and passed it to Sun. They then launched the Huizhou uprising with the Triad. The uprising was started by Cheng Si-Leung in Huizhou and was supported by Japanese Ronin and Philippine Republic, the uprising was successful at the early stage and they soon gathered 20,000 revolutionaries. Later Sun succeeded to gain the support of Kodama Gentaro, Governor-General of Taiwan. But later the Cabinet of Japan was reformed and stopped supporting Sun. The source of foods and weapons was lost. Finally Cheng dismissed the revolutionaries and the uprising was fail.

After the uprising, Sun Yat-sen came back to Japan. Yeung Ku-wan and Cheng Si-Leung stayed in HK. Of course, the Qing Dynasty wouldn’t let them alive. Yeung stayed at 52 Gage Street and acted as an English teacher. In 1901, the Qing Dynasty sent killer Chen Lin to Yeung’s home and killed him by gun. At the same year, Cheung suddenly died after a dinner.
Yeung was killed on the 2nd floor
Yeung Ku-wan was forgotten in history. Sun Yat-sen became the only leader of the revolution. The Revive China Society succeeded in the overthrow of Qing Dynasty and built the Republic of China. And the Triad? It’s now Criminal Organization of HK. And Gelaohui? Lost in history. After death of Yeung, his friend, Tse Tsan-tai buried him in Happy Valley of HK and set up a unnamed grave, being afraid of destroyed by the Qing Dynasty. There’s only a number 6348 marked on the grave. Until 2011, the 100th anniversary of the revolution success, the HK Government sinstalled an information plaque at the grave

If Yeung was not killed, the history of China may be totally different. Some people say that Sun and Yeung disliked each other. Some people say the Republic of China depreciate Yeung to highlighted Sun. People even say that Chiang Kai-shek, former leader of the Republic of China, spent huge money to buy a photo. It’s just because in the photo, Sun stood as a secretary behind Yeung. Some also say that Sun and Yeung were good friends. He even guided Yeung to deliver his daughter.

Of course, time passed, history passed. It’s not important anymore. We can’t see any thing related to the history anymore. Don’t think too much. Just enjoy some sushi and sashimi in the Japanese Resaurant!

What is your opinion about SUN and YEUNG? What if Mr. Yeung did not died?

we can never guess it. But I am quite sure that the knowledge of Yeung was better than Sun

we cannot comment which two had better ability from the history. But I am sure that Yeung also had great ability. He was elected the first president of the Revive China Society. after the failure of the 1st uprising, he went to South Africa,Singapore and Japan to develop the Revive China Society. I don't think a normal person can do this
