Warning: This post contains a picture of a brutally graphic content.
In the post I'll be talking about the murder and death of one Karar Nushi, who he is, what happened, and most importantly what it represents in a country wide prospective and and what his death means in terms of personal freedom and acceptance of homosexuality. If you're reading this without having read the previous post about Homophobia, I'd suggest you read it first as it is a general thought Here
Who is Karar Nushi?
Karar Nushi is an Iraqi stage actor, and a student of the institution of fine arts in Baghdad for his dashing looks that would have led him into competing for Mr. Iraq beauty pageant, a contest that he was seen as favor to win despite him saying he wouldn't do it.
How is he like?
Well, I have met Karar only few times and had only one conversation with him. My sister was part of a stage production he was going to feature in after Ramadan was over, I brought the talk about his long blonde hair and how everyone thought of him as a "Puppy", puppy is a homophobic term used to describe homosexual guys who are for the lack of better terms in my weak vocabulary "Bottoms", I also asked if he's intending to cut it any time soon. Karar's answer was simple, he believed in his freedom of choice, his specific looks has landed him roles and he intends to continue to do that, and while it was not his main aim but he believed that if you see boundaries, can you honestly say that you're free. A statement that I actually agree with as a comedian with lots of dark humored material, however unlike Karar the worst that could happen to me is an insult. Karar was well aware of people calling him "puppy" which annoyed him only in the sense that it's not true and how demeaning the word itself, as Karar and despite being a Muslim never had any problems with homosexuals and had went on occasions to defend their right to live peacefully.
Karar also never took himself too seriously, as you can see here in this video
The clip from a comedy show which he has written himself, came after the constant insults and accusing him of being gay, coming out to Iraqi Television few days after he had put this Facebook post in 27th replying to accusations of people saying he was gay and that he was running for a beauty pageant
Translation: The news about (Being gay and attempting to compete in a beauty pageant) are completely false, and I believe that the true Mr. Iraq. is the one defending Iraq (From Isis), the pictures of me shared around are pictures of my work in plays. Pictures in which I'm very proud to have shared originally and I take my pride in my personal freedom in building my outside looks. I hold silent against those people and their comments as those comments are enough reflective of who they are (I swear to god I love you)
Any Notable work?
Well as said before, Karar was merely a student, so most of his work is institution based theater so not a lot of work that he has done. But prior to his death, Karar shared this picture back in 23rd June
a picture promoting his play on Eid (Mid July), little did anyone know the play was pulled out and he wasn't to feature in it as 10 days after the post Karar met his death after being brutally tortured and murdered by a religious group.
GRAPHIC CONTENT AHEAD
Cause of murder was because he was gay, confirmed by witnesses. Now everyone here can easily agree that the death is equally horrible whether the victim was gay or straight. But for me as an Iraqi I see his death slightly worse because he is straight, not because straight deserve to live more, not even in the slightest. But because his death represents clearly the two ways homosexuals are treated in Iraq and many if not all Arab countries A) Ignorance: anyone following him would have read the post he put out in may 27th in which he stated that what it's said about him regarding being gay isn't true and B) Lack of Tolerance: Shown in the murder itself and the fact that all Iraqi and Arab T.V station describing the death as a "Controversy" and not as hate crime or just simply a crime, and sadly they weren't mistaken because it was seen in interviews on T.V and comments on posts that people were split on whether the murder was justified, and while slightly more people saw the murder as bad, it was the overwhelming majority described him not worthy of living if the rumors were true.
So lest we forget Karar Nushi, a nice, compassionate, talented actor and a beautiful human being both inside and out, we must remember that he has fallen much like many homosexuals, murdered whether by religious militias in Iraq, Egypt, Jordan and many others. or by straight up government laws, hung in the streets by the police in Saudi Arabia and Iran, his death is only the most recent reminder of people judged guilty by simply being who they were. many things can be said about that by the last picture of him, it embodies the acceptance of homosexuals in my country perfectly as colorful, beautiful but dead.
Any person or religion that would torture a person in this fashion can not possibly have a higher power. We are all equal....why can't the world get that!!
