The digital era : Can gadget addiction affect our health

in life •  4 years ago

Every time we are offered information, the brain chooses the one that is simpler and easier.

What should we realize about a world in which we delegate the right to make the most important life decisions to gadgets and get rid of the ability of human understanding?

How many times in the last hour have you picked up your phone to check if you missed anything? Obviously, they didn't miss anything, because they last looked at the screen three minutes ago.

Martin pilot of the Spanish telecommunications company Telefónica and Luz Rellot of the American Carnegie Mellon University decided to organize the Challenge titled Not Disturb the Do ( «Do Not Disturb"). They urged participants to turn off messages on their smartphones for a week. None of them dared to turn off messages for this period, the maximum, to which the participants in the experiment agreed - one day.

This era was enough for 30 subjects to notice the amazing effects of such a " diet", as well as their fantastic dependence on gadgets.

All those who create content now are actually competing for whose content will be primitive and simple.
Some of the participants noted a high level of anxiety that their friends may be offended for the lack of a quick response, and they have the feeling that they are losing a huge amount of news, and they also talked about the feeling that during this period they drop out of life.

However, each of the 30 participants noticed that during their digital detox period, they felt higher levels of performance, better ability to focus, and were more focused on what they were doing during the same day.

Those participants who passed the challenge stated that, based on the results of the experiment, they made a decision to change the notification system on the phone and ... kept their promise for two years.

High levels of anxiety, aggression and anger are not the only consequences of digital addiction. The era of interaction through screens has a much stronger effect on how we think, what decisions we make, how we worsen our memory and, without exaggeration, start to get sick with dementia.

it is not the gadgets themselves that are to blame, but the lack of focus that they contribute to. A person can simultaneously watch a movie on a tablet screen and talk about something in a chat on a smartphone, and although there is a beautiful expression for this "media multitasking", such multitasking weakens the ability to concentrate on one thing, increases distraction and can even provoke emotional problems leading to chronic anxiety and depression. Psychological research has been conducted here for a long time, and now, apparently, the results of such work have received neurobiological evidence.

However, it is worth noting that the studies were only able to find a correlation between the fascination with gadgets and the peculiarities of the brain structure. It is too early to talk about a causal relationship here. Of course, the conclusion suggests itself that it was the devices that caused the restructuring of the gray matter, but it may be that people with some features of the cingulate cortex are drawn to various devices - in this case, a hypertrophied passion for media electronics will be the result.

So the correct answer to the question "Do gadgets affect our brain?" we will receive only after further research on this topic.
