Minnows! I Need To Tell You This Before I Get Drunk Later. It's Important! Your Success Depends On It!

Exclamation points probably mean it's really important!
Gather round, listen up!

Stop Screwing Yourselves Up the Ass!

Hi! My name is @NoNamesLeftToUse, The Writer/Artist Himself. I was once a minnow here, just like you! I had fuck all in my wallet and nobody gave a shit about what I had to say when I started, just like you!

Things changed though. With the odds stacked against me, I was able to earn this badass reputation number thing as well as a nice pile of Steem Power to ride along with it. I'm a big hit at parties too!

Now

I'm not going to go into a long-ass boring essay about how to be prim and proper. That's not entertainment!

I'm not going to tell you how to be a blogger. You either know how, or you don't. Teach yourself if you want it bad enough. Don't be lazy! Google it if you really must know! Google how to format your articles. Teach yourselves everything and learn as you go.

Also

Looking at another blogger's work and emulating their style won't work for you because you're not them. You can't fake this shit! Being yourself makes everything one hell of a lot easier too!

If you came here to be a photographer or an artist, a fiction writer or a news reporter, a philosopher or a politician, I better not see you switch gears and start yapping about Bitcoin just because you saw someone earn $1000 doing it! A glaring majority of those who try to follow the money like that fail! I've seen this with my own eyes far too many times to count.

Damn!

Moving on.

The worst mistake I see so many of you new members making is by far the biggest waste of time and energy imaginable.

Kissing ass!

These so-called self help gurus write up their snazzy little posts about how to be successful here and they do it on a regular basis. Then the copycat artists I mentioned previously join in on the fun.

One person barfs and the others come in to lick it up, then they barf out the same stuff too! Before you know it, we have hundreds of people all spewing the same vomit and I'm suddenly reminded of that one scene in the movie Stand By Me and that completely ruined my thought process!

Anyway!

You'll see this line on every one of those posts and it goes a little something like this:

Unemployment at a record high
People coming, people going, people born to die
Don't ask me, because I don't know why
But it's like that, and that's the way it is.

Wait! Hold up. That's not the line. That's Run-D.M.C.

The line you'll read is something like this:

...Comment, comment, comment! Try to get noticed by a whale or a popular blogger. This will help you!

There are thousands of minnows and only a handful of whales and popular bloggers. Don't waste your votes on them thinking they will return the favor! If you like the post, fine! Don't just do it with the hopes you'll get something back in return!

If you truly seek a return on your efforts, listen up.

Minnows! Vote for Each Other!

Build roads with each other! They will lead somewhere in the future! View your fellow minnow posts. Comment there! Don't sit around with your thumbs up your asses wondering why nobody is voting and viewing your work. I just told you why! You're all too busy trying to get noticed to even notice how many views and votes you could be getting if you simply paid attention to each other!

You think a minnow vote is worthless? Imagine if you had 50-100 minnow votes on your minnow posts! Wouldn't that add up? Wouldn't that be better than sweet-fuck-all?

Yes.jpeg

Strength in numbers, my friends.

Don't depend on a handful of people to hook you up when there are thousands of you who should be willing and able to work as a team.

Sure! It's nice to get noticed by a certain someone with a big vote. Trust me when I tell you this. Ass kissing won't get you that vote, but a damn good post might! If you have a school of minnows already giving a damn good post a fuck-ton of attention, that alone might be enough to get even more attention!

Are You Paying Attention?

Listen, I care about this place and I enjoy seeing others succeed. I've been here over nine months and I've seen new members make the same mistakes over and over and over and over and what the fuck! My head is spinning!

I'm trying to help.

Build those roads, work together, put in the time, see the future. Your Steem Power will build up, your votes will be worth more and every single one of you will gradually climb the ladder.

Many of the established bloggers are busy being committed to the roads they built long ago. There's simply not enough of those big votes to go around. They can't help every single person who needs it so don't depend on them.

During the final days before a minnow finally quits, they often blame all those who've done well here. It's not their fault, it's not my fault, like it or not, it's your fault.

Yes. That's what I was doing back last August. Hanging out with the other new kids. Making friends. Seeing who I liked. And now those of us who stayed the distance are old hands. And we did it together.

I've often wondered how well we'd all be doing if so many others would have actually stuck around. Many gave up when Steem was valued low, cashed out, probably regretting it now, but don't feel like starting from the bottom again because as we all know, it's not easy.

Well written totally agree
Liked and followed :)

Thank you. Welcome to Steemit.

I WAS TOTALLY GUNNA WRITE THIS POST!!!

Gotta be quick!

I have personally also figured out that it's a lot more fruitful to use the platform to express yourself within blogging, commenting and voting. This way we mold and shape the platform to stand equal to that self-expression and -enjoyment rather than the "emptiness" existent within purely chasing the money and keeping our eyes on the price. Something we seem to miss is how our own interactions and expressions shape the world and communities we live in. So if we ourselves are not genuine, considerate and "real", then we can expect to receive the same in return from the world and community we create in our image. Thanks for this post nonameslefttouse

You say it so elegantly, and it's the truth.

Life in the ocean
Most fishes swimming in schools
Solitary whales

Great post, @nonameslefttouse. I'll definitely keep everything you said in mind. Can't wait to see your other secrets after you've had a few, hehe.

Oh! That reminds me...

Here's another good tip.

Don't drink and blog! It can get messy...

You ain't kiddin! So, hear from ya tomorrow then?

thanks you for the tips! I am trying to be a good blogger, but just seeing to my self, on progressive and learning way. I know that with the time, the followers and reputation is gonna come if I do the things well. thanks for the post. greetings form URUGUAY.

One step at a time. If you can only use the elevator, you'll remain out of shape when you reach the top. That's not good. Uruguay? Cool! You just met a Canadian.

YOU ARE RIGHT! step by step is the way. ooh Canada a dream to all traveller, I do longboard downhill too, and Canada is THE PLACE! Maybe someday I can get to all these national parks and the mountains you have.

Hey, I'm your one hundredth view! Do I get a prize? Oh yeah, the prize was reading this post!
I love Stand By Me! Geordie would have done really well here!! Vern not so much ;)
Exclamation points are contagious!
That was a really long exchange at the top, I couldn't make up my mind if someone was trying to sell turtle articles or what was happening haha.

100? Embracing these newbies and giving them a taste of actual honesty for a change was a good idea then. I hope more come. Enough is enough already, they're being misguided, and I don't want to see this place fail. What were we all doing when we were low on SP? Helping each other!

...at least Vern brought a comb.

It was a perfect way to direct them.

What did you bring a comb for? You don't have any hair!
I love Teddy.

This is an outstanding post. Upvotes for days.

Thanks! I had fun pretending to yell!

Ive definitley noticed that a lot of people seem to be soley concerned about trying to get whales and dolphins attention and not giving a shit about other little guys. I think this is ironic considering they tend to get pissed off when no one gives them attention even though they wont give attention to anyone else. Youre one of the only bigger guys i actually read because it seems like you actually give a shit. My plan is just to write what i want to write and progressively get better at it and see what happens!

If I can get there, you should be able to as well. I've come this far, yet I still feel like climbing more. It never gets old. Some days can be tough, but that's life.

Hahaha... good in the face truth and most importantly written in an entertaining way... Nope, not kissing your ass...Ok, go get drunk ;)

I find most of these "how-to Steemit" posts to be dishonest and more about just telling people what they want to hear. Some truth handed out George Carlin style is becoming a lost artform, but I didn't forget how powerful it is. I think people still like entertainment? Nobody likes to hear what they want to hear, once they find out that's what it was.

Canada Day here, so I'll probably have a couple but for the most part, I just thought that was a funny title.

But sometimes George Carlin says those words though.

Shit, Piss, Fuck, Cunt, Cocksucker, Motherfucker, Tits"

And that's from memory my friend (if I can call you that).

Here's another good quote:

I had no idea it was Adlai Stevenson until I just looked it up:

On the plains of hesitation lie the blackened bones of countless millions who at the dawn of victory lay down to rest, and in resting died.

Shit, he had some good stuff too.

I don't even have a shovel that digs that deep.

Truth be told, I saw that Adlai Stevenson quote on a t-shirt about 35 years ago.

Although I am a minnow I've tried my best to be myself and write articles that I am passionate about. Before I used to flock towards the majority but I changed and made posts about what I am interrelated in
Thanks for your tips Nona Mei sleet

I see you working your ass off. You're everywhere as well. You want to succeed, it's obvious. Keep it up!

lol.....enjoyable....i like the flippant hasty style :-) It's like we are all looking for the large diamond whilst passing thousands of small gold coins.

Yup! I'm glad you get it. The other day I saw a penny on the ground. I picked it up, I don't care, why not! Canada doesn't even use them anymore, they're gone, worth nothing, but at least I have one!

I'm commenting now, just to get noticed! With love tho <3

Cheers!

I totally noticed this comment!

Good read @nonameslefttouse !

I try to keep my nose the least brown, but I see myself commenting on whales blogs tho, to try and get my name seen and therefore get some followers. I hope this is not seen as butt kissing lol.

I am trying to be myself, thats easier than pretending to be who you aren´t. Also, being authentic is more interesting, brings new energy, fresh ideas and original content. No need to be a copycat, that will be frown upon ( I would).

Thanks one more time !!

Even I go over there from time to time and leave a comment, but only if something funny comes to mind. I've said a few smart things before too! I've seen your comments when I'm snooping around. I see them here as well, quite often. You don't put out the brown noser vibes. It's not hard to see who's kissing ass. In reality, it's those at the top who should be kissing ass. Their huge investments depend on us in more ways than most realise.

You deserved my 0.01$ upvote fella. Respect ✊

It all adds up. Trust me. That's exactly how I got this far. A vote is a vote. Thank you!

fucking loved it!
".. and that completely ruined my thought process!" xD

Yeah, I kind of trailed off there. LOL!

This came at a good time. I was just going through the hot tab thinking "people talking about bitcoin seems to be what makes money around here." Then yours popped up and reminded me I have yet to see a blog like mine. Very encouraging.

I thought about mentioning how those screenshots of crypto exchange charts posted by minnows are outdated and obsolete before they even hit the post button, but some folks need to find out the hard way.

There is also an abundance of people explaining steemit. We're here. We get it. and if we don't, there's always the FAQ and the discord channel. Why are these posts so popular? I mean ones explaining very basic things. Like what steem power is an other things that have already been explained but should just be common sense.

Many, not all, but many of those particular posts are the tell them what they want to hear style posts. Very simple to write. Doesn't take talent, just a very basic understanding of something. Then others latch on and do one too! It's quite tough to be an actual blogger here and succeed, but not impossible. Human nature comes into play. I've often wondered if some view a good blogger as a threat, so they might refuse to help that person succeed with a vote. Now I'm just rambling.

Oh man. Nothing much to say. This man approves.
Maybe i should try bloggin too after i finish my projects hmmm... Never thought about it before. Was just trying to cool my head while trading.

Don't get me started on trading. That damn P word, they're uh... not being too generous with MY money. I'm not impressed.

  ·  7 years ago (edited)

I've heard some bad stuff about P too. That's why i started on another trading platform.
I've also heard from one talented steemian that today Canada turns 150 years old.
Have fun celebrating man.

I shall try. Heading out soon.

...and I also hope they don't start calling that other one Bitchwrecks, because that would be bad!

This is the realest post I read all fucking day here. Thank you for keeping it 100%

I got it!

You're welcome! ...and thanks for putting one of my favorite people in existence today on my blog. He's Canadian too! The perfect gift on Canada Day!

I completely agree. You gave sound advice. Yes minnows need to partner together. It is about building the relationship and developing friendships. It is like building a business the old fashioned way. and with Hard Fork 19 it is probably even more important. Thanks for the great post.

New members have it so much better today. We were here blogging for 3-4 months everyday before our votes started dropping pennies. Minnows have so much more power, yet they refuse to give it to each other. Such a waste of a good change.

Boy would I like to get $1000 every time I sneezed on Steemit. Account value $5,000,000. The articles are not that great, interesting yes, but outstanding... no...to be honest with you. I think what happens is they are consistent and personal. Letting people see through their eyes. They're everyone's buddy. People upvote them knowing the rewards they will get for curation. But yeah, scrounging around whining and pleading isn't going to do it. Just make some friends. Big or little. A friend is a friend.

They'll get the same amount of curation rewards but most likely more if they wouldn't pile on those heavily favored posts. Every voter gets a 25% cut. If there are 500 votes, that minnow is getting nothing plus wasting their vote. If they vote up someone with 30 votes, the pot is split 30 ways instead of 500. If it's only minnows voting, only minnows get the curation rewards! A dolphin like me can come along, see 3 votes on a minnow post, vote it up 100% and take damn near the entire 25% cut. So many folks just don't get it and when those at the top explain it, of course they will explain it ways that benefit them the most! "Pile on! Look at me! I'm getting richer and richer and it's all your fault!" :)

You can change a structure or organization but changing human nature is a little more difficult. They tend to take it with them wherever they go.

Swimming upstream, I know all about it!

I also like cheese ...

But seriously, right on man!

Personally I write about what I'm passionate about. That can change minute by minute I have a bit of attention deficit ... What the fuck was I talking about?

Oh yeah this post. This shit is GOLD! Gotta have a personality, share your thoughts about shit when you read it, and blog like you got something to say. Originality and sincerity doesn't mean doing what no one else has done, it means writing about it the way you see it! I'm thrilled to see you share that with minnows like me.

Ok, I read some of the comments. Sometimes I break the "rules". I share links from my own shit in comments (because I get tired of typing the same info like 30 goddamn times and I'm answering the same questions or giving the same advice). Sorry for that ... it's who I am probably won't change. I mix it up on my blog, but if you see the intro blurb at the top, it says I'm kinda an all around guy. So it's not chasing the gold it's what I feel is interesting today.

Anyway, rock on! And thanks again!

Small world. I just ate a piece of cheese. It was good, I liked it, might have another.

I'm a digital artist and I write whatever I feel like writing and usually keep it entertaining. I agree, personality goes a long way. If everyone had the same one, all posts would look the same. In life, we hate it when our friend shows up wearing the same shirt.

As for dropping links to advertise your work. Look around. Do you see any experienced members doing that? Nope. It's frowned upon by most. If that was how we do things here, the comment section of every post would be jammed with links and spam instead of genuine responses. I appreciate your honesty, but just know, you might get flagged for that some day. If the link adds to the discussion, that's usually okay, especially if it's not a link to your own work. Links can be used wisely, majority of us just hate the spam style.

Fair enough, I never link anything unrelated and sometimes include references to posts that aren't my own. Especially when I think someone has answered a question way better than I could.

That is powerful in its truth. I hope people get to read this a lot especially the new ones. I am damn out of voting power again at 70 but I will resteem this. You don't need hundreds of followers but a few who are committed to each other to start with.
Thanks for saying what has been rolling in my head for a few days now.

I hope they read it too and since I'm sitting here upvoting every comment that comes this way, I'm sure my voting power is dropping fast too.

You're welcome! Thanks for being the first Ned on Steemit to actually speak to me.

Now I will have to make a post that explains that when I make a complement I mean that shit. I know there are ass kissers here, they are all over the world and that's life. There are a Thousands of people on stemmit (210,000) to be a little more accurate, and every one of them have there own agendas for being here. The one's that will make it are the one's, and I'm even talking about the established one's as well, the people that will adapt to change. They will look into the future with experience and wisdom. They will adapt to change and overcome any fear of that change. Humility is a virtue and an amazing strength. Those that have it here on this platform will make it, those that don't won't. If any person is hear for greed only I really see you becoming just a memory. I may be wrong and this place may turn into the rest of the world, human nature and all that, but I will push against it as hard as anyone could. Your post has some wisdom, I hope you can build upon that! Thank you!

People can usually see the difference between honesty and bullshit butt kissing. It's not hard. The ass kissing type becomes so disappointed and pouts when they don't get what they want as well. That's just part of being that type of person. You'll go nowhere, and fast, if you can't walk the walk after talking the talk.

Ya I can see your point. Thank you for pointing that out.

Totalmente de acuerdo

Fantástico.

Good information. Thanks for getting it all out before you get drunk later.

Always plan a safe blog home.

Great advice!

I can only agree!

I agree @nonameslefttouse i been on here less than a month powering through! Check out me post on "3 Successful Tips" For New Steemit User's

Good stuff, thank you. I am new and need to understand quick!

Makes total sense to me.

love love this post... so true! :)

Wait, do we need copyrights on the blockchain?

I like to protect majority of my work for three main reasons.

  1. Simply put, since governments and corporations speak that language, if they ever try to shut this place down or buy it out, I can skip the hassles and lawyer fees and go straight to them owing me restitution for attempting to shut my business down without consent.
  2. If I ever sell the account, I can skip the hassles and lawyer fees to keep and publish my work elsewhere.
  3. If I ever decide to sell my brand, actually owning it is a step in the right direction and gives it value.

It didn't occur to me that a Steemit account could be sold as a product. That's a pretty interesting idea.

Loved the post! As a minnow, I think this is amazing advice to be receiving from someone who made it big and knows the workings of this platform.

Is there a reason why I can't resteem this post? Have you disabled that option?

This is an old post. Still relevant! Everything here means as much as it did then as it does now. Your comment made me come back here to read it the whole thing again. I fucking like it too! Damn. Did good here! Anyway, I think it's too old to resteem. If you ever want to share the link with people, feel free!

Hahahaha. Glad it helped! I was reading one of your comments, where you said you gotta work your way up despite the changing system that exists today and suggested to go through some of your old posts to see the progression, because it was hard for the people who have been in the community for some time now to rise up in their early days as well. So I decided to go through old posts of people to learn the ropes on steam, and I came across this one.

From my limited understanding of things, steemit has changed quite a bit since its inception. And there seems to be a lot of politics/ buying&selling of votes going around these days. I dont like the idea of having to do that to get steem power, but when I come to think of it, even if I create a lot of good content, without the support of people its hard to get traction in the beginning right? The alternative would be to curate, but with such low steem power is it worth the return to curate (only with respect to steem power, in terms of benefiting the community I think curation is really vital). What are your opinions on that?

You need the eyes on your work. If you came to game the system, with no talent, and don't care about some sort of blogging career/hobby; I'm certain you'll end up spending way too much money trying to do that. There was a post recently published and the blogger spent ridiculous amounts of money to basically feel like a hero for a day or two. The message was clear and people saw it, but spending hundreds if not thousands of dollars to purchase those votes is stupid and set a really bad example. That's my opinion there.

You can spend money to get eyes, or you can develop a solid following who will support you for free simply because they enjoy your work.

Curation is incredibly important. When I'm not writing up a post, or responding to comments, I try to get out and vote as much as possible. Since people seem to enjoy my stuff, I've been able to build up a nice pile of Steempower. I like to use it to give back as much as possible.

I really appreciateyour attitude. It was this communal thought process that blew my mind when I first started reading about steemit and decided to join. It felt a little disheartening to see how the philosophy of Dan started something extraordinarily potent, but it changed as it developed and selfish interests dominated the system.

With that being said though, I think if enough people post their honest selves then we will always have a balance of good and bad, and natural progression will take care of the rest and shape the platform to what it is bound to become, whatever that may be.

As for my individual contribution I'm beginning to understand that all I can do is that. Be honest and create a reflection of myself and let nature take its course henceforth.

Your post helped me decide to stick around! It may be an uphill battle but I'm looking forward to it! Thanks again.

I'll follow you. Hopefully I can help you out some day. Don't be a stranger!

I'm really glad to hear that! Thank you. Looking forward to it. No I don't expect I'll be a stranger. The sarcasm and apt profanity in your writing resonates with me.. hahahaha
