Do yourself a favor and train your thoughts to be cheerful

What if I told you that the words we say and the sounds we hear have a huge impact on our lives? Would you believe me? Do you still not believe me? As children, do you remember how much we all dreaded going to the dentist? Take, for example, the scenario in which your dentist was a child psychiatrist who put your fears at ease by telling you stories as he worked on your teeth.

Despite the fact that you were physically sitting in the dentist's chair, you were no longer afraid and were in a better mental state than you had been before. It is clear from this example that pleasure has more to do with our thoughts than with our physical environment. Furthermore, the words we use or hear on a regular basis have an impact on our happiness through altering our way of thinking about things.

Positive phrases, according to research, can activate the motivational parts of our brain, whilst using negative words on a frequent basis has the opposite effect on our motivational regions. Dr. Thomas Jefferson is a neuroscientist at Thomas Jefferson University who specialises in cognitive neuroscience.

According to the book "Phrases Can Change Your Brain" by Andrew Newberg and communication specialist Mark Robert Waldman, when we use negative words on a regular basis, we activate our brain's fear centre, causing stress-producing hormones to circulate throughout our bodies and causing us to feel anxious.

So, what methods do you use to construct phrases during the day? Are the words that come out of your lips critical or whiny phrases, or are they words that will help to improve your situation? If we continually use negative language and attribute our happiness to external situations, we are setting ourselves up for disappointment.

We expect to be ecstatic when we finally get that red dress we've been eyeing, or when we graduate from college or receive a raise at work, but these pleasures are fleeting. Happiness is always considered as a goal to be reached. Happiness, on the other hand, is found in the act of travelling.

Happiness is a state of mind in which we alternate between having positive and negative ideas at the same time. When we say things like "I am too overweight, I loathe myself," we are on the way to being depressed. It's a good notion to say, "I want to lose weight, and I believe I did everything correctly in collaboration with dieticians," and it makes us feel good.

So, what can we do to make our thoughts more pleasant? Try to make a habit of cultivating positive thoughts in your mind.

Directing our attention to positive events, thinking positively, being careful that the words we say to ourselves are positive, but not knocking ourselves down when we use negative words, ignoring the ruthless critic living within us, and spending five to ten minutes a day noticing the positive things in your life and around you are all ways to improve your outlook.

Come in and do yourself a favor by training your mind to choose happiness as a default setting going forward.
