Humans first discovered fish feeding on the surface of lakes and streams, eating insects, which brought the fish almost within reach, at some point in our shared history, according to legend. These hunters invented a method of catching fish by imitating the flies that the fish were eating, which resulted in the invention of fly fishing. Despite the fact that the first written account of fly fishing does not specifically specify the bugs that the anglers were emulating, it does indicate that they were fishing for trout. Furthermore, those fish were most likely consuming mayflies.
