A Conifer cone is an organ of the plant division Coniferophyta (conifers), which contains reproductive components and is classified as a reproductive organ. The female cone, which is the woody cone we are all familiar with, is the one that produces seeds. Menstruating male cones are often herbaceous and less noticeable than female cones, even when they are fully mature. The name "cone" comes from the fact that the shape of some species is reminiscent of a geometric cone in shape. Scales are the names given to the different plates that make up a cone.
