More than just memes and gifs

Although it has been incredibly fun laughing at the funny memes and gifs people are creating, I wanted to take a step back and recognize that there is so much potential for different types of humor on this platform.

At some point, I hope steemit becomes THE place for stand up comedians and sketch writers/performers to showcase their talent without having to deal with all of the bullshit they currently have to wade through.

For those of you who are far younger than I am, my profile picture is of George Carlin. His Carlin at Carnegie from 1983 was the first full stand up routine I remember seeing. Although I was too young to understand at the time, it was brilliant. Simply brilliant. As a 10 year old, I laughed at the swear words and the silly jokes he always mixed in. As I grew up and watched this special over and over again, it taught me a lot about the world and the importance of looking for bullshit.

Sadly, it is also timeless. If he were alive today, Carlin could have simply changed the names of the major players and his jokes would be just as funny and true as they were back in 1983.

Here is a small sample of Carlin's brilliance. Notice how he flawlessly balances nonsensical fun with some cutting political commentary.

Comedy can be more than just a quick laugh. Comedy should be a way to shine a light on society in hopes of affecting a change.

What's your favorite stand up routine? Post a link and some text adding to the humor or explaining why you love it so much.

Good humor indeed is timeless, it is many times also boarderless. China is pretty much as far away from Swedish culture you can get, at least in some aspects, but the humor I find is many times similar and it can be a great way for me to connect with people here. My favorite stand up would have to be from Eddie Murphy when he is doing dilirious. He has the audience in his palm. I also like will Farrell's stand up "You're Welcome America: A Final Night With George W. Bush"

It would be awesome if you can find your favorite clip and write a little about it.

Oh and I plan on sharing some Eddie Murphy in the coming days. I honestly couldn't remember if I saw Carlin or Murphy on HBO first. But it was the same year.

I will try to find it and do that - it would be a lot of fun . The fact is that I didn't know about the fact that Eddie Murphy started off as a stand up comedian. I only saw him in some movies.

When I first saw his stand up I was amazed - he was made for that - he simply owned the stage .. alright I better stop now and save some for the future post ;)

Thanx for the reference to some of will ferrell's material .. Will have to check that out !

Always loved E. Murphy too [as Gumby & in his films too ] ♥

You should definitely check out the stand up by will Ferrell ! - it's hilarious

Ok will do !

I can already know I'll laugh at this ♦♦ I cried when George W. got elected.
I had real negative feelings about what was going to come about, w/ him in office ♦♦ Just sorry so many soldiers had to die..

But thanx 4 the tip !

I can imagine how devastated many felt, and it was completely unexpected as well.

YES!
COMEDY WRITERS AND STAND UPS!

The coming of Communities to Steemit can make it the center of creative work on the internet worldwide. BE A PART OF IT!

Dave Chappelle and Dane Cook were both sources of most of the humor in and around my dorm during my years in college. More recently, the Netflix Dave Chappelle special (episode 2) is pee-your-pants funny.

Unfortunately, can't find the link as it's on Netflix, but I strongly encourage you to watch it.

Yes, he really did strike a good balance ♦♦ Though I never saw him in person, I did see some masters, Richard Pryor & Jay Leno
(even a female comedian, Elayne Boozler - That was in Vegas, & she put out a pretty #funny performance -- "Cracking wise" just seems to come natural to her).

Anyway, I do recall the clever & INNOVATIVE routines of Carlin's -- loved his Political rants (He was good at this in the same way as Dennis Miller always was ) -- I actually read Dennis Miller's book & found it pretty entertaining.

Anyhow, I just LOVE Carlin's expressions as he's doing the #News here

Ive listened to a lot of music and read many web comics but havent checked out the stand up comics yet. I see no reason why this shouldnt become the go-to place for comics to get their name out there. Steemit is growing by the day and yet hasnt even realized 1/millionth of its potential.
