Its was long and it was hot. Too hot for me.

Today is Ssatruday, a long run day. I missed out on sneaking in a long run yesterday because the plumber turned up first thing I the morning and stayed all day.

So we got up early this morning and got al the chores done so I could get out and run. The plan was to just go as long as I could (within reason).

The first 10kms were fine. I was running well, and felt pretty good. The second 10kms were quite hot and I was starting to struggle a bit by the time I entered the third loop.

That’s when things started to really hurt. It wasn’t so much the running, but the heat. It just got hotter and hotter. My heart rate was over 140 bpm when I was just walking!

I struggled on determined to do at least one more circuit. But it was becoming quite clear that it was too hot for me to be running. I was overheating even after dousing myself with cold water. There was a risk that if I kept going I get heatstroke.

Heatstroke is not the most fun you can have, so I decided to quit on the third loop and head for home.

It was disappointing not to get more miles under my belt, but I think continuing would have been stupid (and I’m good at being stupid).

I think I’m going to have to start running early in the morning again to avoid the heat of the day. Who would have thought such a thing would ever be necessary in New Zealand?

Oh man, I feel you!! The heat can be SO dangerous and for us hard headed runners even more so. I can Totally relate to that conflicted feeling of wanting to get more in But but by doing so knowing you're actually risking your own health. The heat where I used to live in the southeast U.S. was terrible so humid. Every year I thought I would become more accustomed to the heat which in some ways I did but I've been legit overheated before and that's not fun!

The thing is this is really unusual for Wellington. We are actually 5-10 degrees warmer than we should be for this time of year.

It should make for an awesome Christmas. But it does make running during the day quite a challenge.

After the wettest winter in memory, straight into the warmest, dryest summer, we go by extremes down here.
Early mornings would seem to be on your menu.

Yeah i know. Not too keen on that though ;-)

That was a real long Run!! And not really slow paced 👍🏻

It was pretty slow towards the end :-) When I started walking the bits i should have been running I knew it was time to call it a day.
