I check out the window of the abandoned building to see if anybody is outside. I can see pretty well to the entrance. I see nobody coming so I take my opportunity to check out the floor for supplies, as the first is easily accessible by looters. I gather what I find and then I check outside once more, then go downstairs to head out.
I take a second to say good bye to my generous shelter.

Up until now, we've all stayed huddled near the food supplies on this floor, hoping to protect it from looters. No one has been willing to go off on their own, or even in small groups, to explore the rest of the floor, much less the building. Who knows what....or who....may be waiting in the shadows. We've all been much safer together, right here, where we can guard the food and each other.
Has anyone else been in this building? Oh, definitely. We've heard the noises coming from the floors below....crashing, shooting, screaming. Bad things have gone on just below us. We've been fortunate in that our floor is so high up. It gets hot in the south, even in the winter, and even the toughest gangs have thus far been unwilling to climb a few stories of stairs in the heat. If the power were on and the elevators working, we'd have been invaded and likely slaughtered already. Then again, if we had power, none of this would be happening in the first place. Everything would be normal, like it's supposed to be.
But now, we have no more food. We managed to dole out enough from the last two cans of black beans last night for everyone to have a spoonful. The last few bottles of water went with that meal, if you can call a single bite a meal. We can't stay here anymore, or we'll starve. Actually, in the heat and crushing humidity, most of us would probably die of thirst before starving became a distant option.
We have to leave.
It's not like we didn't know this day would come. The longer the power stayed off, the more likely it became that it would never come back on. The food wouldn't last forever, especially with so many of us. So now, we have to make our way out of town, into the country. It's got to be safer there, with wild plants to eat, free running water to drink, and, hopefully, no gangs. We might be able to make a go of it in the country, homesteading and creating society anew, without power. I mean, people did it a century ago. Why should we be any less capable?
Getting out of town safely is the key, and the hardest part of this whole thing. We have no supplies. Literally nothing to bring with us. No food, no water, no clothing but what we already wear, and no means to defend ourselves except with our own bodies. Some people here can fight really well, and are skilled in hand-to-hand combat. The problem is, most of that won't do any good against the weapons the gangs have hoarded and use with abandon.
We've taken a group meeting, and have decided the best thing to do is to divide our numbers in half. One half, the weaker ones, young, old, ill, disabled, and pregnant women will stay here, guarding each other and our empty food pantry. The other half, me among them, will search the rest of this floor. We've only just been in this small part of it. Who knows what else might be here? More food? Water? Blankets? Medicine? Clothing? Weapons? We can use any of it. Any little thing we find has the potential to help us get safely out of town.
I don't think anyone else is on this floor except us, since we haven't heard anything that sounded like it was here, but you never know. That's why so many of us are going together. Safety in numbers, you know?
The goal is to sweep the floor, looking in every nook and cranny of it, bagging what we find that may be useful, then getting out on the street and heading out of town before it gets dark. You don't want to travel after dark here.
If we're very lucky, we'll find what we need to get us safely out of town before dark, and maybe even some things to help us start a new life in the country.

I have lost track of time since being stranded in this loft. The view is beautiful, well other than all the explosions and death below me. My food is nearly gone, all I have left is this last sip of water and a few pieces of crust from bread that was already drier than sand. It won’t be long before I starve to death. As I can see it, I have two options, stay here and search this floor for more food or get out of this building and out of town as quickly as possible. I could search the rest of the building but I am sure there would be nothing left to find. I fear my time is running short. If I wait any longer the sun will set, the dark times will start, and I don’t want to end up like Kai. Oh my sweet Kai, she couldn’t handle being in this building and trapped like a hamster in a cage. I don’t know what happened to her after she left but I imagine it wasn’t good. I miss her company. The streets are clear of people and I figure that I have a couple of hours left to get out of this place before I follow the same fate as Kai. I need to make a decision and now. I stop stare at the yellows and reds in the sky as the sunsets and head for the door. I must find more supplies or else I won’t last long out there. I will search this floor and then move on. Let’s just hope that after I find some food or maybe a weapon, it’s not too late to get out of town.

Dear Diary,
My meager food and water supply is all but gone. Leaving is the only option now. The guns shots and fires are getting closer to the building so this was inevitable anyway. I will need to pry the boards off my door to get out but I have decided to search this floor first and then get the hell out of here. I think I am the only one up here, or at least I haven't heard anyone else. I'm hoping that means I might be able to find some supplies up here before I head out. God I hope I can make it out of here and find her...

I choose option 3. I stayed enough in one place, I slept with an eye open, can't really get a good peaceful sleep here, and my back it is a bit stuff.
Time to get moving, I am searching the floor to find something to eat and to defend myself for what is to come, if I don't find some kind of weapon, hell, I will I improvise something from what I can find.
I am so hungry, I will have to eat something, cockroaches are a good way to get some protein in me.
Worst case I will try to get a fire going, if I find the supplies, to cook some rats. I have to do everything that I can do to prepare for what is to come.

I'd take my time and loot my floor thoroughly, hopefully find some food, and weapons, before heading out of the building. Having a suspicious feeling he's been here before, @DeanLogic believes he should search the floor I am on and then get out on the street, because that's what the voice in his head commands that he do. If he were under control of his own actions, he would carefully search every floor as he headed down, before heading out on the street, but that's not in the cards....Hmmm... cards. @DeanLogic pulls out his Urban Survival Playing Cards and mutters "Shit, these are useless!" Throws them to the ground and begins to fondle around like teenager in the back seat during his first heavy petting date.
