There is an experiment going on to improve the platform. Both of of your post would have probably yield less than 5 cents a week ago but because of this experiment new users are able to earn at least some rewards. Before the experiment 1% of users controlled 99% of the reward allocation, the downvote thing is so far the best thing the community found to make the platform more fair. Smooth is auto downvoting thousands of posts not just yours https://steemd.com/@smooth

Thank you for giving me this information, I really appreciate it. It was very informative and gave me an insight into the community and how they are attempting to make it better. I apologize for jumping to conclusions and thank you for not attacking me for it and providing answers.
