Why I chose to teach for free

The topic for steemit education homework raised mixed emotions in me. It took me back to the time when I was in college. My dad who was a lawyer and an honest one at that used to help a lot of people by providing them the means to education. He gave funds to young clerks and helped them gain a degree in law. He also refused fees when poor clients offered it for a case. Life was good until one day, he succumbed to a massive heart attack.

Our life fell apart. My dad had put all his savings on our house. The monthly instalments were a huge burden on my elder brother who was the only earning member at that time. Well, God does not forsake those who pray to him. Our neighbours were very supportive. When I expressed a wish to study journalism, one of them came forward and paid the entire amount in advance. I completed the course and soon got a job in a media house. Life teaches you a lot and I was no more the spoilt brat that I was, earlier.

I later left my job after my marriage as I had shifted residency to a village. I felt a void inside me and I wanted to do something good in return for the good done to me during the most difficult time in my life. We had a few poor farm workers as neighbours. They were really poor and could not even afford electricity in their house. The children used to study with the help of kerosene lanterns. Their mother remarked that her sons were drifting off and would drop out if they did not receive proper guidance. I asked her if I could give them tuitions in the evening and she said she would send her second son over. The elder one had football practice and could not come regularly.

I decided to teach them for free because I felt I would be repaying the debt of kindness shown to me. Also, I wanted to really help the lady and her kids. Soon, many kids came to learn during their free time and I helped them to study. They later went on to complete their education. One of them became a chemical engineer and another a skilled craftsman. I feel so grateful to God that they did not drop out.

I think James Joyce had it right when he said that "Life is like an echo, what you send out comes back but if you don't like what gets back to you it means you should change the message you send in the first place". I think you are sending the right message :)
