Mid-Week Musings: Trying to Drink More Water

in water •  7 years ago

I have been trying to drink more water throughout the day. I know that I need to do this, but I really find the taste (or really the lack thereof) to be boring, so I end up drinking less than I should.

I found this interesting article of the top 10 reasons you should drink more water:

  1. Increases Energy & Relieves Fatigue
  2. Promotes Weight Loss
  3. Flushes Out Toxins
  4. Improves Skin Complexion
  5. Maintains Digestive Regularity
  6. Boosts Immune System
  7. Natural Headache Remedy
  8. Prevents Cramps & Sprains
  9. Puts You in a Good Mood
  10. Saves Money

With all these benefits in mind, I have been trying to find ways to help me drink more water. Perhaps the best way that has helped me drink more water is to add “flavor boosters” to the water.

There are a number of different types and brands on the market, but I have been enjoying the Crystal Light brand and have found more options than the more expensive Mio brand. Add a squirt of one of these to my bottles of water has been helping me drink more.

What helps you drink more water?

Water has so many health benefits, as listed by some of the other commenters here. Water hydrates our cells and keeps our system running more smoothly.

However....

Adding artificial flavorings and sweeteners can undo all the benefits of water. Look at the ingredients in most drink mixes on the shelf. You'll find stuff like:
Citric Acid, Sodium Citrate, Gum Arabic, Sucralose (Sweeteners), Contains Less than 2% of Natural Flavor, Sucrose Acetate Isobutyrate, Red 40, Blue 1, Yellow 6, Potassium Sorbate (Preservative).

There are sweeteners, preservatives, dyes and other chemicals... all taking away from the healthy properties of drinking water in the first place. ;-)

Yes, some people find the taste of water "boring." Adding a slice of lemon jazzes up the flavor AND alkalinizes the water, and making your system more alkaline has many health benefits. There are other ways to add flavor, such as floating fruit and herbs in a jar of water. Try a couple slices of cucumber and some fresh mint; a small slice of watermelon and a sprig of rosemary; a few strawberries and lemon slices; pineapple-mint-ginger is a good combination... the list is endless. A quick internet search for "flavoring water naturally" comes up with lots of great ideas. Mother Nature provides many fresh 'flavor boosters' that can also have healthy side effects.

Go forth and hydrate, y'all! :-)

Thank you for your valuable input my friend. Well done.... I probably won’t give up my artificial sweetener tho, as it’s too good! 😇

Hahaha!

I don't need motivation to drink more. I love water! Other than a cup or two of coffee in the morning and a glass of skim milk to mix protein powder into, water is the only thing I drink. I drink a liter of water during my workout, and then probably 3-4 liters throughout the day. And you're right about all of those benefits. There's nothing like it!

I have stop drinking sodas since 2013 and drinking Crystal Light powdered packs helped me change. I drink a gallon of water a day or more, you will get there and after a while you won't need the flavor boosters anymore. Great job of trying to drink more water.

Wow, that is a lot of water! Great job!

I love fresh water at our house, directly from the tap. Because we have our own reservoar and water runs from beneath high hills. I started drinking more water to get myself full in the middle of my intermittent fastin(eating once a day). I also cut down most of the sugar, and sweet things. So I started making lemonade without sugar. At first just one lemon for the whole bottle. And last week I could easily drink 5 lemons squezeed and mixed in one bottle. I think this is the most natural you can get and its still tasty. My friend mixes her water with lemon, ginger and kurkuma. Try it and you will see.

Thank you for the tips!

I have had this struggle for so long. I can go a week or two without water, I usualle take lotsa tea , sodas and juice.
I try to take more water but my motivation doesn't surpass a few days.
This was a great article that I can relate to.
I think I'll emulate your strategy.

Thank You!

Greetings from Nairobi,Kenya.

Greetings my friend! Appreciate you stopping by!

70% of human body is made up of fluids, so we should have them more for our healthy life

@calitoo

I just have a protein shake and I work out at school because I have a weight training class and it helps a lot

excellent..I just have made a point to drink more..once had extreme dehydration (in florida's heat)..that was a scare.. thanks for your past support..upvote/following.

Drinking water helps. When I wake up in the morning, I drink a full cup of water without brushing my mouth. It's helps like you said. But adding flavor.????? Haven't done that before. Should try it out. Nice post

I try to avoid artificial flavor, so I like to add some lemon juice to my water. That helps give it a little kick and makes me more likely to actually drink it. :)

Friend Brian, interesting article that should put to reflect more than one with respect to their habits with the water intake. I am a university professor in food science, and I can attest that what you point out is like that. All the best for you and yours. Best regards.

That's right you have to drink a lot of water, many do not like it because its taste is simple but once they recommended me to place slices of lemon, naranaja or some fruit to give a little flavor to this water, that helps a lot

For me I'm having the Cebion Vitamin C tablet (1000mg) that I mixed with a 500ml of water. I suggest for you to try it, it's good if you don't eat much of vit c rich food.
It has a soda-orangy taste to it which i like.

Hello friend, flavored water does not bring many benefits most are dyes that damage our body usually do not drink so much water but I remember many times that I should do it and I go and I do, you have to drink between 2 or 3 liters daily, that brings many benefits in addition if you exercise, drink water is important

Hello friend, I drink a little water too and that in venezuela is very hot, my family tells me that you have to drink 2 liters of water a day and I really can not, I prefer to drink flavored water!

I also had that problem of not drinking a lot of water, now what I do to consume it more often is to buy tamarind (a very tasty but acid fruit) and I make two liters of juice daily (without sugar). Not many can drink it that way, but it keeps me hydrated.

@brian.rr switch to carbonated water. I found that the bubbles made up for the lack of flavour and then after a while normal water will seem just as good too.

Good advice... thanks!

I also find drinking water from a stainless steel flask to be better as it doesn't impart any flavour. I like the double walled type that keeps water extra cold.

Excellent publication friend @brian.rrr, is very informative and educational. Water is very important for our body and for our health, 70% of our body is water, specialists say that it is necessary to drink at least 8 glasses of water a day and if one can take more it is better. Personally I drink a lot of water a day, about 10 glasses, since I do sports and it is necessary to keep me well hydrated because when you sweat a lot you become dehydrated, and I drink enough water so that this does not happen. On a personal level, I have not been bored by the water and I drink a lot, but I love your idea of adding any type of flavor to the water so that it has a fruit flavor or a more pleasant taste. This will be a good option for children who always like to try new things and like to drink juices, adding this type of flavoring to water would also be perfect for them, as it is still as healthy because they now sell many water flavors that do not They contain no type of chemicals. Excellent idea friend, no matter how we take it but it is always important to drink plenty of water.

I personally love drinking water. I find it super refreshing, especially when it is cold. I like to have my water as cold as possible and will often have it on ice. I also really like carbonation. I am not a big pop drinker but I like the fizz of carbonation when I drink. This means that I like Perrier and other types of carbonated water. This can get expensive so I actually own a Soda Stream that I use to carbonate my own water. We also like to have our water filtered so we have a Reverse Osmosis machine.

Great health related post @brian.rrr! your content is very helpful. Keep up the good work! It's always nice to see good content here on Steemit.

Ribena 🙂 I love blackcurrant flavoured drinks. I know it's adding sugar, but it also has some benefits and it's diluted in as much water as you please (depending on your taste).
