Hello fellow teachers and students, again with you in this lovely projects pursued by @steemiteducation and other educational communities. In my least capacity that I can, I want to support empowering education in our teachers and students, by sharing contents that are beneficial for all in this blocks.

In today's lesson, I want us to share the most effective method of teaching which has impacted positively in teaching and learning in basic schools in my area. This method was introduced by UK based Tuitor inspectory of basic schools called, "David Bans." This method of teaching and learning is known as-"Engagement, Timing and Pacing Method." The method centres on involving the students more in the lesson alotted for them, whiles the teacher becomes a facilitator.

Engagement:

The students in class are paired up by the teacher during lesson delivery, from the introduction of the lesson, till the closure. Each specific objective has the activity that will be allowed for students to engage themselves. The method can be used in all subjects and topics. For instance you happen to teach parts of a flower in basic 7. You will pair the students, give each pair starter a sample flower comprising all the parts. With student relevant previous knowledge on flowers on their environment, ask and guide them to dismantle each part of the flower, whiles the teacher being facilitator helps them to know their various names. Since students are engaged, they will do think-pair share whereby they will contribute during the activities. They will discuss the lesson, give feedback, present the lesson to the whole class. The teacher moves round to guide students in the cause of working and help those with difficulties.

Timing:

Students are allowed to work within specific time with respect to the specific objective. When the time is up, you allow the students to stop and present their answers. The esense of doing this is to help students to be time conscious. It also help students to work within time during examination. The time allocated for each specific objective shouldn't be more than 5mins, to avoid the lesson being boring for the students. At each point, students are prompted are prompted for the time spent so that they wouldn't waste time.

Pacing:

Pacing here means, the students
work at one step at a time with specific rate. Because teaching and learning is systematic, the objective one for dismantling the parts of a flower with 5mins, must be fully exhausted before moving to objective two which will ask students to state one function of each part of the flower. The pair activities are chronologically arranged for the lesson to flow till the closure, where students are asked to solve simple questions based on the lesson. At each specific objective of pair activities, the teacher must discuss and correct students wrong answers.

How relevance and effective is this method?

  • The method engages students through the lesson. For instance, using pair activities help students to work in team, share ideas and come out with answers.
  • It ensures effective questioning and answers. Through the lesson, the students are engage with questions before them to be answers. When they finish each specific objective, they have to submit feedback to the whole class.
  • Effective time usage during lesson. With the promt of time during students pair activities, it monitors student from going beyond time allocation. They are always smart.
  • Team work. The method aids students to learn how to work in team to come out with answers. This is one of the good methods which discard idlness as most students are fond of doing that.
  • Boost students thinking ability. Many students are reluctant to think and come out with answers, but because of this method, there is a probability of every students in the class thinking and contributing in many ways.
  • Teachers have ample time to help students, since the method discourages too much lecturing method.

This is one of the best I have so far enjoyed in my teaching and learning career. Most schools have also benefited since the method was introduced. In the district where I teach, the method has been very effective and efficient. I hope, it will also help your teaching and learning in your area. Thanks for joining me here!

Keep students engaged and learning can be a challenging task for many educators, parents, and other folks. As a parent, and life longer learner, I struggle with this. However, my kids school recently shared this article: https://www.coursehero.com/faculty-club/classroom-tips/george-ashline/ on how to keep students engaged with classroom tech. I think that most people have access to the same if not similar resources to keep our students engaged at home during this unprecedented time.
