An easy day after a super hot day

in sports •  7 years ago  (edited)

It’s a bit cooler this morning, which made for much more pleasant running conditions. Today was an easy run day for a number of reasons.

1 – I can’t go hard every day without getting injured. So it makes sense to tone it back now and then.
2 – I did a pool session last night (mostly to cool off) focusing on my breathing. So my lungs are not really up for being punished today.
3 – If it stays cool, I’ll be heading out for a longer run this evening

So I ran lightly, concentrating on relaxing my shoulders and hips. That takes some work actually. I keep tensing up as soon as I stop concentrating on it. So plenty of work to be done here I think.

I did notice a big difference in how I felt when I got home however. I feel a lot less taxed than usual (maybe because I was running slower??) so I think the running relaxed thing is going to work well for me.

The next step will be to transition the relaxed running into the trails. At the moment I’m just doing a street circuit while I focus on getting things right.

One interesting thing I found in the pool last night while wearing my Garmin 630 sport watch – the touch screen is very sensitive to water. It kept changing screens while I was swimming! The water flowing over it was making it flip to all sorts of admin screens and such. Quite annoying really.

It also didn’t track my heart rate and distance properly. So there was no point in wearing it really. The swim training should, with any luck, improve my lung efficiency, and the core work I did before getting into the pool should work towards addressing my core issues.

That, combined with my discovery of the secret sauce for running, might just make me into a runner that is not constantly in a race for last place. One can only hope.

So what is secret sauce for running? 😃 Who cares who is last... anybody who runs beats all those who don't!

Whoopps I forgot to put the link in ;-)

https://steemit.com/running/@trevor.george/i-think-i-may-have-just-found-the-secret-sauce

I have been running with tense shoulders and hips. If I relax them when I run, I can go a lot faster a lot easier for a lot longer.

I'm sure every other runner already know this, but it just took me a while to figure it out ;-)

I see, in the meantime, I read your blog about this. Makes me think... I believe this is something it can help me as well. Thank you so much! So not every runner knows it... I think I also might be to stiff. I wish you great next run!

What I did to manage this today, is as I'm running push downwards and slightly forwards with my elbows and feel the release in the muscles between my shoulder blades, and then make sure my shoulders are moving in time with my cadence.

And for my hips, (this is a bot odd, but work with me) you make your bum wiggle a bit. Don't let your hips drop as such, but let your hips be loose and try pushing down from your hips first as you stride.

Give that a try and let me know how it feels

Thank you! Will have to practice a bit and see how it goes. This stuff is difficult to translate into words and vice versa, so I am not sure if I fully understand the instructions, but ... practice makes perfect 😊.

Yeah it is difficult to describe. I'll see if I can video myself doing it tomorrow.

That's if I can do it on my run tomorrow ;-)

😊

thanks.

For how many years have you kids said that vitamin "W" was the answer to all problems.
There was no problem that Watties Tomato Sauce couldn't fix, try that, a good quick clean out and your muscles will have nothing to clamp down on, you are fixed.

Except - if you remember, it was my sisters that drank vitamin W and put it on everything. The only thing I had vitamin W with was spaghetti ;-)

I'm thinking running relaxed is really going to make a big difference in the long races. I know I can cover the distance, and my legs have the strength and stamina to keep going, even up and down hills, so if I get this sorted, i'm going to have much better results.

We will see how things turn out in March. i'm really looking forward to the next race now ;-)

I can remember the endless supply of vitamin W bottles going to the dump.

I've still not been out and about. If I could kick my own ar$e I would ... or should.

I can't imagine what it's like to go out and about in that heat. I love hot summers but don't tend to do anything more than a little gardening.

Throw some YouTube videos on of people getting out there doing it, and then put your shoes on and GO! :-)
(works for me)

It has cooled down a bit today. but next week it is supposed to get really hot.
