My world without internet

in internet •  10 months ago

A world without internet, can you imagine. The wifi connection at my home has been disconnected due to some cabling issues since past 2 days, and I have been struggling keeping up with my online jobs. The problem here is that the data packs are super expensive and hence it's not very economical to shift to mobile data during such times. In India, the wifi at my home is most of the time switched off as we all use data packs, which are very economical. But, here in Muscat I cannot afford to do that. 2GB data will cost me around 7 to 8 dollars, and that gets over so quickly if I have to do all my work. So whatever little data I have I have been using it miserly since the past 2 days, and it's got over already, so I had to recharge another 2 GB data today morning.

Today I am in office, so I came a little early to finish off some of my personal online jobs. I tried to borrow my neighbor's wifi connection and they were very happy to help also. The problem is that I get the signal only at my entrance door. Now I cannot sit over there all day and use their internet.

So kind of, the last 2 days have been almost internet free with very minimal usage. In a way it's good, I feel nice staying away from it. And at the same time inconvenient also because most of the work is online these days. We have lodged a complaint, and hopefully today the mechanic will turn up to resolve the issue. So let's hope for the best. I hope that when I reach home in the evening after work by that time the problem is resolved.

Thank you for visiting my blog. 👼🏻👼🏻💖💖🌹🌺🌸

In Vietnam (where I'm living now temporarily) 4GB is 90,000 dong, which is $3.70. I guess the price is relative to the country's cost of living. Is Muscat expensive to live in? What is the average minimum hourly wage?

In Korea, it is KRW 37,500~55,000 a month ($40~45) for unlimited mobile data. Generally, it got so expensive in Korea that we had to leave. The minimum wage in South Korea is only $7.40 an hour, which is extremely low compared to living expenses.

Btw, it's so hard to get by without wifi, I agree. Actually, the wifi isn't very stable in Vietnam and I teach on Zoom. I have to teach with the door open or the connection is cut. I completely understand your pain @nainaztengra

4GB at 3.70$ is still a better deal then ours. In India I get 40GB and unlimited calling and messaging at 5$. But here I always feel very strained and when I go out I keep looking out for free wifi...hehe, which is there in almost all the places.
Muscat is expensive in some ways. Day to day utilities are still at affordable prices, but transport and luxuries you will have to pay a premium price. In India for a minimum distance cab, I will pay a far of less then .50 cents by an ordinary cab, where as here the cab the minimum fare is 2.5$.

The minimum wage here will be at around 10$ a day, this I am talking about is for the labor class works, like in constructions and cleaning facilities. But then all these people who do the low end jobs here are expats and they are given all living facilities, like food, accommodation, transport, utility bills, so what they earn is full saving, except for some of their own personal expenses. Then the low scale office jobs get paid around 25$ and they are also given everything on the living expense part, so again whatever they earn is a full saving.

Muscat seems like a better deal than South Korea when it comes to living costs and wages.

It was inconvenient in some ways but then did not miss it much, rather I felt good that I was forced to stay away from it.
