가장 유명한 시도는 '콜라 시추공'

콜라는 소련의 지명이고
콜라 반도

시추공은 땅속 깊이 뚫은 구멍을 말한다.
과학 연구를 위해 1970년 파기 시작해
1989년까지 20년 동안 파고 들어갔다.
깊이 12.3킬로미터
이게 얼마나 대단하냐면…
인간이 만든 지상 구조물은
가장 높은 게 1킬로미터가 되지 않는다.
‘부르즈 할리파’ 830미터

자연이 만든
지구에서 가장 높은 에베레스트 조차
10킬로미터가 되지 않는다.
에베레스트산 8,849미터
반대로 가장 깊은 곳은
태평양판이 필리핀판 밑으로 들어가며
만들어진 마리나아 해구Mariana Trench로
약 11킬로미터다.
에베레스트가 잠긴다.
땅 속 12킬로미터는 어마어마한 깊이다.
처음 팔 때는
15킬로미터 깊이를 목표로 했지만
12킬로미터를 파고 들어가자
온도가 180도에 달해
시추를 포기했다.
콜라 시추공 이후에
카타르(2008년)나 러시아 사할린(2012년)에
석유개발을 목적으로
약간 더 깊이 시추하기도 했어.

깊이만 보면 이들이 깊긴 한데 바다에서 한 거라
땅을 파내려간 깊이는
아직까지 콜라시추공이 가장 깊다.
콜라 시추공 : 지각을 판 깊이 12,262미터
러시아 사할린 Z-44 Chayvo well : 바다+바다아래 지각을 판 깊이 12,345미터
그런 깊이에 도달한 사실이 인간에게는 놀랍지만
지구 입장에서 보면 스크래치에 지나지 않는다.
12.3킬로미터는 지구 반지름6,371킬로미터의
0.2%에 불과하다.
산과 바다로 둘러싸인 지구는
고저차 때문에 골프공처럼 울퉁불퉁할 거 같지만
사실 탁구공처럼 매끄럽다.
휴먼 스케일과 자연의 스케일은
그 차이를 가늠하기 어렵다.
