Moth Caterpillar

in macro •  3 years ago

There are many different types of caterpillars, including butterfly and moth larvae, that can be found in different shapes and sizes. While the vast majority of caterpillars are harmless, stinging caterpillars make it plain that they do not want to be touched in any way at all.

Predators are kept at bay by stinging caterpillars, which employ a similar protective approach. Itchy setae are prickly spines or bristles that irritate the skin and cause it to itch. Each hollow seta has a single secretory cell that produces poison. It is possible to hold the spines in place with your finger before they are expelled from the caterpillar's body and released onto your skin.
