On the last Hash run of the year in Chiang Mai, we tend to go out of our way to make it special and also have a "Rambo" (more difficult) trail that is 12 km or more. This year didn't disappoint, with Hares "Alice" and "Taste my Buns" arranging the trail for all of us. These two are kind of legends in the Chiang Mai Hash community and are very dedicated members. If they make a trail for you, you can rest assured that it is going to be top notch.
As is tradition the run took place in the Mae Wang area outside of the city and because we know that the run is going to be longer than usual we started at 3pm instead of 4:30. We do this so we don't have to go around looking for stragglers in the dark who try in vain to do the Rambo trail when they really belong on the "Wimp" trail.
What makes this area special is that it is one of the few parts of Chiang Mai that has both hills and flat areas and plenty of clear and also rarely used trails that exist for the local people's farms. The people that live here and operate these farms are well aware of who we are and they don't mind that we use the land so this is just an added bonus.
This is the time of year where we can count on having good weather but seeing as how this is a tropical country there is always the fear of rain. Thankfully we lucked out yet again and not a drop fell from the almost perfectly clear sky. There was some moaning from the members about it being too hot but it is kind of a tradition to moan about something, really anything, if you are on a Hash run.
Some of the terrain was quite rugged, and this was chosen on purpose. These runs are supposed to be challenging but not dangerous and Alice and Taste my Buns did a great job of finding that ever-so-perfect mix to make this run one of the best of the year.
Plenty of people turned up but there were very few visitors which was a shame. As is usual the pack was dominated by men but that is just because we have a 4 to 1 men to woman membership ratio.
It started out as a walk but things quickly became a race between some of our FRB's or "front running bastards." By the end of it most people had decided to take the wimp trail but enough took the Rambo one to justify it being there in the first place.
A good time was had by all and if you ever find yourself in Chiang Mai I once again want to encourage all of you to come and join us. I promise it will change your life for the better. We are still doing 3 runs per week and you can get all the details on our poorly made and barely functioning official website
