Sunday Run: Running for fun

in running •  6 years ago

Today was the Stotfold Challenge. It's a 5k fun run to raise money for Etonbury Academy, which is where my kids went. A more famous pupil was Olympic cyclist Victoria Pendleton. I've done this event several times before. The course stretches over the local farm tracks. It's only about 2km from home, so I jogged there to warm up.

This is me after the race.

There were a couple of hundred entrants. Lots of kids and then all ages. We were asked to sort ourselves according to how fast we expected to be, but I tend to end up too far back and then have to overtake a lot of people early on. A lot of the kids start out too fast and can't keep it up, but some of them did really well.

Start

They have various sponsors to help with the prizes and goodie bags. Yes, there's fruit too.

Medals

I set off fairly fast and was able to get away from the masses early on. Some of the tracks are narrow, so it's no so easy to pass. There's lots of long grass to get through around the fields. I overtook a few more along the way, but by the last km I didn't have much left and a couple came past me. I was still pleased to see the clock just ticking past 27 minutes as I finished.

Endomondo reckons I did slightly better than that. My all time best is about a minute quicker and I'd love to get back to that.

Stats

I hung around to see a few more people, but there was nobody I knew there. I walked and jogged back home and am now enjoying some fresh coffee.

Well done @steevc!

Sounds like you did really well. Especially a you have had a bit of an injury so have been running less. 😊

Have a nice relaxing rest of the day. 😊

Run when you can, walk if you have to, crawl if you must; just never give up.

Very cool! Looks like it was for a great cause. It is always nice to support your schools. When I was in high school I went to a practice with the cross country team once. It didn't go very well for me :) I wish I had stuck with it though!

I was never very sporty at school, but I wish I'd started again running sooner. I'm enjoying it

Yeah me neither. I played tennis my senior year and I had never played it before, but they needed people for the team. I was horrible and we lost every match, but it was still fun.

Not a bad time, and a medal too boot!

I'll keep chasing better times before age really catches up with me :)

I could ask @bingbabe to be a pacer for you? ;)

She might help me keep the pace, if I can keep up. I generally try to use others as pacers in a race, but sometimes I end up going past them or they zoom off. I gave it my all this time.

Bet that coffee tastes good!
It looks like a nice fun run, good for everyone.
Your legs feeling better now?

The legs are not too bad. I expect I'll feel it tomorrow. Got some jobs to do this afternoon.

Well, it's a lovely day for the garden. I've just seen a raised 120x60 planter for free - trying to organise transport, would be perfect for growing!

yey! Is this personal best on 5K now? If yes, congratulations! And a noble cause is another reason to upvote your participation on the run.

I've run quicker than this, but not for a long time. That's why I'm happy with my time. I've had a bit of a cold, so I may not be at full fitness right now.

In this case (cold) the result is really great!

Well done. That's a pretty good time considering it is off road and you have to get past a bunch of excited kids and stuff.

I bet now that you've done your half marathon this doesn't seem quite so far huh? ;-)

Not bad, the best part of this participation is that anyone could participate without restrictions, apparently. Starting too fast could be a mistake, you have to maintain a constant rhythm, plus you have to know how to mentalize fatigue.

Nice run! I do not think we do this sort of fundraising in Nigeria.

They just organize a party or something.

Running is really popular here, but there are lots of other events to raise money.

Great run!

That is a great initiative to raise money for a particular course through running, I believe such type of running is good for the runners in the form of health benefits , it is also a better way to meet and make new friends. Am glad you enjoy yourself at the event

It does not matter where you finished the race, but the only thing matters is your participation in the race which is praisable.. Running is good for cardiac muscles snd circulation of blood of the body... this is an great initiative to raise money for some causes and also improve your health..
I hope you have enjoyed the fun race..

I know :) Yes I enjoyed it

good work appreciated and followed
