What is Cognitive Distortion and How to Overcome?

in cognitive •  5 months ago

A concept that is associated with the Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) school of therapy is known as cognitive distortion. This means that the individual is expressing their prejudiced beliefs about themselves, the environment in which they live, and the world in general.

Despite the fact that bias is an efficient method for the human brain to model, it frequently puts us in a position where we make mistakes. Naturally, there will be certain drawbacks associated with the need to make judgements quickly.

In spite of the fact that these errors can be overlooked at ideal levels (for example, accepting someone who claims to be British as a Christian without question), individuals should always be on the lookout for ways to rectify this notion, as they are aware that they cannot accept this circumstance as being entirely accurate.

A circumstance like this would be pointless because it would deprive us of the primary objective of this matter, which is to reduce the amount of energy that is consumed. Because of this, the human mind is prone to engaging in cognitive distortions and falling into illusions on a seemingly regular basis.

The fact that the Englishman I stated in the example is not a Christian is something that we are able to readily acknowledge, and we are also able to quickly overcome this general bias with regard to that particular individual, rather than with regard to English people in general.

The question is, are we able to maintain this level of awareness and readiness in circumstances where the event is far more unique and where we are sometimes the only ones present?

One of the primary reasons that cognitive distortions are deemed to be a subject is because of this. There are times when things do not go as to plan.

According to this cognitive distortion model, which was proposed by the school of cognitive behavioural therapy, the method in which people's ideas proceed is a specific and typical pattern.

These erroneous thoughts and beliefs, also known as disorders in the thinking system, can result in a variety of situations and behaviours, including anxiety, low self-esteem, depression, and problems in professional and personal relationships.

Because of this, it is essential to be conscious of the thoughts that are the root cause of this kind of issue and to have the ability to shift those thoughts into ones that are more rational and objective.

The ability to think more rationally will result in psychological and behavioural results that are more favourable.
