Every living thing on Earth needs room. Humans are more alive, energised, and creative when they have enough room. Humans without homes are like animals without territories. A violation of biological and natural rules.
Physical space delineation and enforcement mirror emotional and mental space delineation and respect. It shows your capacity to establish yourself, respect yourself, and be respected. Check if you respect yourself and others in your physical world to determine how much you respect your emotional and mental space.
Like everyone else, you want all the space you want, yet living and working with others with diverse demands may make this impossible. As an example:
Your kids shout while playing while you want quiet;
You dislike your spouse's pals or vice versa;
Your companion hoards old things while you get rid of them;
You want to go out regularly but your partner stays home.
Here are some signs that you have trouble defining and respecting your space:
You seek to dominate and modify others, not respect their space. If so, others probably treat you similarly;
In the world of “having and doing,” you believe in “live and let live”—letting family members do what they want in your space is loving.
Claiming your space makes you feel bad. Example: Someone shouts in your ears, you stop them, and you feel terrible for being so direct;
When you refuse to lend or offer money or make requests, you fear being considered selfish. Example: You can't ask to stop smoking in your car.
Pirouette to avoid rejection or abandonment.
Unconsciously, you develop an illness to find peace and regain space.
The less you respect and enforce your zone, the more others will intrude. If an animal doesn't scent its territory, other creatures will invade. What others do to you reflects what you do to yourself and others. Blaming people and demanding distance won't help. It must start within. Some ways to get there.
Take a few minutes to jot out your true desires. Review the definitions of physical, emotional, and mental space to determine your ideal.
Decide that only you can create your area. Talk about it with others. Ask them about their dream space. Discuss how everyone can be satisfied. Everyone has a winning solution.
Your space may not be respected the first time. Check if you felt suffocated, lacked space, or disrespected by yourself or others at the conclusion of each day. Write down the situation and consider how to improve next time.
Allow yourself to not enforce your space yet, knowing you will.
Write down what you liked about your place daily and praise yourself.
Remember your right to varied needs. Remember these vital necessities. Nobody else can determine your space. This is your obligation and the only way to live in your own space while respecting others'. Remember that this world has enough space for everyone, just like it has enough air!
