"오늘의 English 단어" 시간에는 재미있고 독특한 단어들을 알려드립니다. 영어가 어렵다고 싫어하시는 분들도 계신데요, 재미있는 단어를 배우면서 영어에 흥미 잃지 마시고 즐겁게 공부하셨으면 좋겠습니다.
지난번 의도치 않게 '라이트' 시리즈로 글을 쓰게 됐습니다. 블랙 라이트와 문라이트였지요. (글 맨 아래에 보시면 링크가 있습니다. 혹시 못 보신 분들은 방문해보세요. ^^) 그런데 그 글 밑에 @happyworkingmom 님께서 이런 댓글을 남겨주셨습니다.
라이트가 들어가는 게 뭐가 있을까 생각해봤더니, 초대만 하면 자리를 빛내주시던 쌍라이트 형제도 떠오르고요.
우리가 흔히 쓰는 '스포트라이트(spotlight)', '하이라이트(highlight)'도 떠오르더군요. 그러다가 딱 떠오른 단어가 있었으니!!! 바로 limelight입니다.
light이 '빛'이라는 건 다들 아실 테고. lime도 알고 계시죠? 시크릿 가든에 나왔던 길라임 아닙니다. 초록색의 시큼한 과일 '라임' 아시지요? 바로 그 라임이지요. 그런데, lime에는 또다른 뜻이 있습니다. 바로 '석회'라는 뜻입니다. 그렇다면 limelight은 '석회빛'이 되는 군요.
사실 limelight은 예전에 연극무대에서 사용했던 무대용 조명기구입니다. 석회를 가열해서 빛을 내는 거였죠. 아래 그림처럼 생겼는데 저 실린더 안에 들어있는 석회를 가열해서 빛을 내는 거였답니다. 그래서 '석회등' 즉, limelight이라고 불렀지요. 그런데 석회광에는 또 무슨 뜻이 숨어있을까요?

무대 위에서 화려하게 조명을 비추는 걸 떠올려보시면 쉽게 짐작이 가실 겁니다. in the limelight이라고 하면 "각광받다, (모두의) 관심을 받다. 모두의 주목을 받다, 사람들의 이목을 끌다"라는 뜻이 됩니다. 우리가 흔히 '스포트라이트'를 받는다고 하는 것과 비슷한 뜻이지요.
우리 모두 스티밋 유명 인사가 돼서 limelight 한번 받아봅시다!! ^^
